Where to Eat and Drink in South West Somerset: Our Favourite Pubs & Restaurants Near Thornfalcon

Somerset has so many great producers and fantastic pubs and restaurants within 10-30 mins of Thornfalcon - from cocktails on a double decker orchard bus, to exceptional gastro pub food and modern fine dining. Here are a few of our favourites, in order of distance from the farm.

Good for: a thriving, dog-friendly village pub across the fields from Thornfalcon 

This is a thriving village pub, with good food, drinks and a vibrant atmosphere. One of the closest pubs to Thornfalcon, it’s a 10 min drive, or a longer walk across the fields from the farm. It’s dog and family friendly, with plenty of outdoor space, low wooden beams, an open fire, cask beers and food from local produce – if you’re going on a Friday evening, get here early as it will be busy! Find out more

Good for: fine pub dining with a National Trust property next door 

This award-winning pub and restaurant is nestled between Ilminster and Langport, and sits directly opposite the 13th century St Mary’s Church with its octagonal tower, and next to the National Trust’s Barrington Court. The restaurant menu focuses on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients from the farmers, foragers, brewers and cheesemongers living within a few miles of Barrington. The pub is fully stocked with produce from across the South West, and has a wide selection of local ales, ciders, and craft beers on tap, as well as local gins and English sparkling wine. 15 mins from Thornfalcon. Find out more

Transforming the former bank in picturesque South Petherton 20 mins from Thornfalcon, Holm is a modern and high-end fine dining restaurant, where head chef Henry Osmond works alongside restaurateur Nicholas Balfe to devise menus full of flavour, all inspired by the local Somerset countryside and produce. What’s on offer is what you might expect at a high-end London restaurant, in a simple and striking contemporary Somerset interior. There’s an excellent wine shop and bar over the road too. Find out more

Good for: Sunday roasts and a perfectly kept pint 

The Dinnington Docks is an unspoilt country pub, where locals, visitors and dogs are all welcome. Famous for its exceptional beer selection, it serves Cask Marque approved local ales, local ciders, spirits and a good wine list to complement a menu of pub classics and daily specials with local ingredients. This unpretentious and cosy pub is great for its Sunday roasts. Set in an old Hamstone building on the ancient Fosse Roman road, this pub is thought to have been a coaching stop in the early 1600s, with many of the foundation stones robbed from a nearby Roman villa. 20 mins from Thornfalcon. Find out more

Good for: a winter weekend with log fires 

The Poulett Arms is a fantastic 17th century pub in the gorgeous village of Hinton Saint George, 25 mins from Thornfalcon. Cosy, stylish, beautifully decorated with log fires blazing in winter and a lovely garden in summer, the food is the main attraction. Menus change seasonally, based on the area’s local produce – a perfect balance of hearty pub fare and refined gourmet options, alongside an excellent wine list. Find out more

Good for: Saturday afternoon cider and music in the orchards 

Burrow Hill has been making excellent cider for over 50 years, with over 40 varieties of apples grown across 100 acres, as well as award-winning cider brandy and a range of liqueurs and juices. Burrow Hill comes alive on Saturdays from May to September when the orchards are filled with visitors. Drinks are served from a double decker cider bus and bar, changing (and delicious) food trucks are great for lunch – or bring a picnic – and acrobats, bands, circus and performances are often part of the entertainment.
